Suppose if God is absent
We often say that God is with us. But in reality, when any country, any nationality or any Individual faces disaster, diseases, wars and sorrows, God is often absent or we can say that he is not present at that time and compels human beings to suffer alone from sorrows and injustice. At that time, what can we do? What should we do so that the human beings continue to live with dignity and create that goodness that belongs to man? This book has given us an answer through a tragic love story which surges forward with tremendous momentum, and a love symphony of social harmony and cultural tolerance: Only by learning to lerance and love, we can live through chaotic time.
The story in this book originates in the Second World War. Talented pianist Adam is a depressed Jewish youth. If there were no exclusion of the Jewish people by Nazis, he would not have escaped to Leningrad; If she had a harmonious family, May Li, who was orphaned from the Red Army in Russia, would not have melt Adam on the eve of the war between Russia and Germany. They were like clouds floating in different cities. They did not have any omen, so in the sanctuary of music, they silently fell in love. Together, they composed # 8 Romantic time in descending D tone. One of them had passion for remembering and comparing the wide fields of motherland, the other had enormous soft feelings for classical China in her bones. They yearn for love as two free birds, as two clouds embracing each other, as two trees with branches meeting together and as two blades of grass entangled with each other. Nevertheless, when the German army launched a plan of “Babaluosa” war, enormous Jewish people in exile had to find home again. Almost every country in the world closed the doors to the Jewish people. At this time, the Shanghai of China was the legend of “Noah’s Ark” to the Jewish people which made Adam and May Li escaped to the Far East at the same time. After reaching Shanghai, Adam and a big group of Jewish people were first admitted to a refugee camp, later they were taken to the “segregated district” of Jewish people in Hong Kou which was the same type of concentration camp occupied by the Japanese army. Because May Li was an orphan from the Red Army, so she was at once admitted into an anti-Japan base of Subei’s New Fourth Army. The war led their love to look for into the distance and they could just bid sad farewell to each other. They prayed to God, the awkward thing was that May Li gave birth to a golden haired baby in the base of New Fourth Army, therefore happiness rippled in misery.
That was a difficult era of thoughts which gave rise to miserable life that is difficult for modern man to imagine.
While facing wars, killings, hunger and diseases, Jewish people who earnestly believed in God, who had the agreement of Ten Prohibitions with God, a small number of them joined antiwar movement, a big number of them fell into waiting for unlimited loss by God. But the Chinese people who were struggling in miseries like them, opened their hearts and accepted them. In the eyes of Chinese people, these Jewish people with blue eyes and golden hair were superior to them. To them, they were foreigners. These foreigners, those Jewish people who were superior to them were facing miseries as well, as if they were princes and princesses who had fallen into difficulty. They especially made people sympathize with them. Moreover, in Chinese culture there had never been any inheritance of racial discrimination. Therefore, the disappointed Jewish people received the risky aid from the people of Shanghai. They used various methods to smuggle food and medicines for them. In this way, so many Jewish people maintained their lives. May Li was the planner and executor of this risky aid plan. Adam and his community group expressed gratitude. On 7th July 1945, when allied forces bombarded Japanese troops warehouse and radio station, they also bombarded the Hong Kou’s segregated area of the Jewish people and the Chinese refugees’ district. Big fire burned down the wall between segregated Jewish people and the Shanghai refugees. Therefore, in the end, people of both the races were amalgamated. In the flames and debris of ten miles Long Street, people rushed to save each other. A sad song of this century was performed which moved several generations.
When Sino – Japanese war ended, internal was started. Adam and May Li again missed the time and location of their meeting. After new China was formed, due to political reasons, Adam and May Li remained away from each other. Only the music of their sincere love was spreading boundless ideas and guarding. They made an appointment to meet in heaven where they accumulated the lost time and love bit by bit.
It seems that this is an epic of tragic romance but the Roby belief and the splendour of human nature reins through this epic. Especially in the later half of this book, Adam’s son sought spiritual home and underwent suffering at distant places across the sea. Jewish doctor Martin waited beside May Li like an idol. They used love and tolerance, even sympathy and compassion to dissolve the hatred of the Red Guards in the Cultural Revolution. By visual angle of the Jewish people, we unfold another type of historical picture: when a country magnificently thinks of “reforming” its own national “culture” and traditional “life”, disaster is not far way!
There is no doubt that this book is a novel of classic significance. The miseries of war, poetic thinking, holy belief, the power of tragic story, void and exquisite romantic feelings as well as the penetrating force of art, all of these artistic elements are deeply inserted in the story and trifles of this book. On common spiritual surface of mankind, this book communicates with the readers of different cultures. This book dialogues with the world literature. It lets the towering China deliver this message to the world: No matter in the past or at present, or in the future, the Chinese people who have been nurtured by the Chinese culture, are humanitarian who love peace. They have enough mindfulness and tolerance to amalgamate with different cultures and civilizations. They are going towards universal brotherhood and harmony. Today’s world is facing conflict between civilizations and contradiction between religions. In the past, the forgiveness and love that took places in Shanghai, China during the Second World War had surpassed the harmony of nationalities and cultures. Why can’t it be a model of peace in today’s world?
We must emphasize that although this book’s main them is serious and magnificent, yet reading the story is like seeing and learning from the big epic; Going through the details makes you linger on. The writer’s understanding of the classical music, the description of piano youth Adam’s sensitive and friable psychology, the passionate outlet of man and woman’s love in the atmosphere of music, the correct and vivid picturization of the nature of various characters, all of those have provided the readers with life’s rare experience. Following the publication of “Wolf Totem”, I am waiting to be able to establish a good sale and moving towards world’s second novel……….
