Synopsis

The protagonist is named Wang Chunjie, and her English name is Bella. After her graduation from university, she married A-Gen, son of a high-ranking military general. Since she did not shed blood at the first night of her marriage, which means she did not have an intact hymen to prove she was a virgin, her mother-in-law began to treat her badly. A-Gen was a filial obedient son and could not protect her. Therefore, with the assistance by her classmate, she escaped from the marriage and went to Japan. In a university in Tokyo, she met Hai-Tian, a Japanese boy, and they fell in love, a love lingering and charming. Behaving as an elder sister, Bella took Hai-Tian, with her tenderness and maturity, into a bodily experience that he never had before. And Hai-Tian also received from Bella a motherly kindness in addition to sexual love. They made their engagement on top of the Fuji Mountain as a heaven-made match. However, Hai-Tian’s parents did not agree with their marriage. They thought they would lose face among their rich Japanese relatives and friends if Hai-Tian would marry a divorced Chinese woman five years older than him. While Bella was waiting without any hope, Graham, the man from Wall Street, appeared in her life. This is an absurd unification: they fell in love at the first sight, as if God intentionally let Bella suffer first and then gave her an apple. There were no sweet words between them, nor racking their brains. They seemed to have mutual affinity, awaiting each other for a long time …… If Bella’s marriage with A-Gen resulted from her misunderstanding of love, and if her encounter with Hai-Tian ended in a sister-brotherly love and doomed to failure for fear of the horrible feudalist tradition, then her love with Graham can be seen as the purist love between man and woman, in which all the differences of race, culture, religion, and history seems to have gone into the far horizon. At the moment when they met, they felt they were burning with deep love. Every glance and every touch exchanged between them became a piece of music or a song! It is here that the writer shows her artistic talent: fluent moving language inserted with slow groaning, plots open and close alternately with episode as background, and sexual intercourse like sculptures in a charming idyllic scenery. Wandering about unhurriedly in Bella’s novel seems to be in a fairyland of early times, enjoying only aesthetic purity. Nobody would not be moved and fascinated, for what you see is simply the apex of love. After 12 years when Graham finally got divorced and could go with Bella to a church for wedding, the tragedy happened. In the morning of September 11, the day of wedding, when they were driving toward the church, they cannot restrain their hot passions and kissed each other in the car. Bella left a red mark of her lipstick on Graham’s white tie due to her carelessness in excitement. As Graham was a person who always seeks for the most perfect, he went to his office on the 102nd floor of the World Trade Center to change his tie – there he kept a similar one. Meanwhile, the driver took the bride to the church, where she redid her makeup in front of a mirror while waiting for the bridegroom with an excited heart …… Then suddenly came the tragedy, which surprised the whole world. No presentiment, no omen, and no indication at all. Bella run toward the billowing smoke, against the current of fleeing people, calling out for her bridegroom. Indeed, the terrorism challenges not just America and the goddess of liberty, not just a different civilization and belief, but also the life of every living individual and their right to love! Bella’s symphony of love abruptly stopped ……
The last part of the last chapter is entitled “The Heavenly Stop”. Every reader can imagine the meaning of it. Who can accept a symphony that breaks off abruptly? Even if the beautiful love ended in tragedy, people would rather believe that it is still going on. It is the persistent seeking for happiness that has developed today’s civilization and art. Bella imagines that she and her bridegroom meet again at the Heavenly stop.
